Walnut

Family Name: Juglandaceae ,English Name: Walnut, Walnut Tree ,Sanskrit : Akshot, Akshod

Walnut is a beautiful and fragrant tree, which is found in two forms.

  1. Wild walnut : These are 100 to 200 feet tall that grow wild. The shell of the fruit is thick.
  2. Agriculturally grown Walnut : These are 40 to 90 feet tall and fruits have fine thin peel/ shell. These wall nuts as known as Paper Walnut.

Appearance:

New branches of walnut are silky in the back. The bark is of dust colour and has lateral fissures. The leaves are dense in the flank and root is hairy. There are 5-3 leaves on the twigs; they are 3-4 inch long, 2-4 inch wide and oval in shape. The greenish unisex flowers are rectangular with straight edges. The fruits are round with two yellow spots at the ends and their skin is leathery. The kernel is fragrant. The tree flowers in spring and bears fruits in autumn.
